Domestic Equivalence (2006 - 2009) The history of Photography is irrevocably connected with the domestic experience. Images of home life inundate our lives and transmit the personal, often fragmented moments of everyday life. Photographs of domesticity collectively form a language that speaks on both idiosyncratic and universal levels. On the one hand, ubiquitous meaning can likely be found in the familiarity of most domestic environments. The objects and arrangements of these spaces act as signifiers that transmit the symbols of a domestic language common to us all. Our home provide a place for privacy, comfort and reflection; they harbor the ephemera and memories of our lives that gradually amass over time. On the other hand, many of these details communicate specific or intimate meaning that resonates solely with the person who inhabits the space. Photographs of the domestic experience fortify that Photography, despite its powers of illumination, cannot fully elucidate everything that falls within the frame. There will always be certain meaning that remains private, that escapes the scrutiny of the camera. With these dichotomies in mind, Domestic Equivalence investigates the boundaries between public and private space, between revelation and concealment. I aim to create images that simultaneously achieve both a sense of familiarity and foreignness, photographs that speak to both personal collective histories.
